1. Understand why you are trying to lose weight- I have yet to meet a successful person who has accomplished their weight loss goals simply based on a target number on a scale. The main reason for weight loss should be better overall health and wellness. Remember, looking good is the bi-product of living good! Make sure to make your goals realistic and attainable!
2.Remove all sugary foods and unhealthy snacks from your pantry- Eliminating the temptations is a key step in the right direction! If you can’t access bad food then you won’t eat bad food. Fill your refrigerator with plenty of greens. Leave a fruit bowl on your counter top. Keep raw, unsalted nuts handy at all times. All of these items make great individual snacks both mid-day or in between meals!
3. Keep a log or journal- The practice of writing down what you eat is a real eye-opener! I always suggest that you write down everything you eat. Draw a line down the center of your journal. On the right side list all of the “good” meals that you eat. On the left, all of the “bad”. Look at it daily and again at the end of the week. My rule of thumb is 80%… If you are making healthy choices 80% of the time you will succeed in your weight loss goals! You’ll also realize that you may not be eating as well as you think you are and will be able to make adjustments.
4. Fill up on vegetables and greens- Eat extra vegetables or salads. Fill up whenever you are hungry on extra vegetables or salads. When eating lunch or dinner, I always recommend eating your greens last. Begin with your proteins and carbohydrates; then follow with as many green vegetables or salads as you need to fill up. You can eat as many veggies as you like without doing any damage!
5. Get plenty of sleep- Yes, it’s cliche! Of course it is- but only because it is completely true. The proper amount of sleep ensures proper mental function, and will also help prolong energy levels. You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll perform at the gym and how much easier it is to think at work with proper rest. And yes… it will help with fat-burning too! You’ll enhance your metabolic health rate all around. The key question is… How much sleep? Rule of thumb, 8 hours per day! Make it happen. You’ll be glad you did.
